Spiritual Strongholds begin in the Mind!
*Stronghold in the Mind??
Let’s break it down…
What is a stronghold? What is a mind? from dictionary.com
Stronghold= is a fortress, a prison house
Mind= 1. That which is responsible for one’s reasons, thoughts, feelings, wills, perception judgments, etc.: the processes of the human mind.
To heed or obey (a person, advice, instructions, etc.).
So to me a Stronghold in the Mind= A fortress and prison that houses our reason, thoughts, feelings, wills, perceptions and judgements. What has a stronghold on my mind…hmmmmm? Are they positive strongholds or are they destructive?
It is vital to protect our minds. We may have some areas in our minds that are in-prison, places we are having trouble breaking free from.
Having a free and sober mind will help us reason, combat and will protect us from the enemy and those who try to destroy us.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
3 We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
One of the enemy’s strategies is to create spiritual strongholds in the mind, to have you obey his instructions and advice and not the Lord’s. It is a spiritual attack that we make tangible in our lives by believing it. It has the power to influence your life, the way you view things, the way you see and treat others and the way you view yourself.
God warns us about the things that the enemy can use to influence our lives and create strongholds that will capture our imaginations.
- Our own flesh and minds can start to live in a way that is contradicting to the word of God. Let’s ask ourselves some questions that may reveal strongholds and set us free from bondage.
- How does Satan continue to cause you to fall?
- What area of your life gives him(the enemy) the ability to wage war with you?
- What are you willing to do to change this?
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
2 Corinthians 12:20-21
20 For I am afraid that when I come I won’t like what I find, and you won’t like my response. I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior. 21 Yes, I am afraid that when I come again, God will humble me in your presence. And I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins. You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure.
These scriptures clearly tell us that we can’t avoid these desires without God. It says in the scripture that the Results are very clear when we are following our own thoughts and flesh and not the word of God.
It is scary to read that Jesus, our Lord and Savior is afraid that He wont like what he’ll find…. We should be more afraid! We need to keep the truth with us always and compare what we are doing with the word of God.
In order to overcome the enemy and the prison he tries to build in our minds we need to understand that we are not fighting against others but against the enemy himself and that there are things in our lives that we need to deal with and get to the root of so we can overcome this battle and break down the walls.
The devil’s primary strategy is to disguise his activities so that it appears that someone or something else is to blame. He wants us to get our attention on his surrogates, his instruments, his hindrances and “wrestle” with them, so that our battle will be directed against the “symptoms” instead of the “real source.”
Remember when Peter resisted Jesus’ decision to return to Jerusalem, knowing that He would be crucified there? Jesus did not rebuke Peter, but turned to Peter and rebuked Satan. “Get behind me Satan” (Matt. 16:23). Peter wasn’t demon possessed, and probably didn’t intend to be an offense. However, the Devil inspired Peter’s statement, and Jesus went after the real source.
Paul said that our battle is not with “flesh and blood” but with spiritual adversaries (Eph. 6:12). How important it is that we understand what the real root of the problem is — “who” our real enemy is. It is Satan, not flesh and blood, not our brethren, not our family, not our children, not husbands and wives, not employers, nor our government! The Devil is the enemy!
Surrogates= One that takes the place of another; a substitute; To put in the place of another, especially as a successor; replace.
What is so amazing is that we are fully equipped to handle these issues if we really make up our minds to do so. We can overcome and kick the enemies behind. We do not need to take another moment of these deceptions and lies in our lives. The key is that you choose life and chose to obey the Lord and his word and not confusion that the enemy has been plaguing you with for so long. Strongholds are given to you long before you knew it was coming.
5 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. 7 You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. 8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. 10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
See God doesn’t say that he will put it to death because he already has. You are now responsible to figure out what is your stronghold and put it to death.
2 Corinthians 10:5
We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
Your reason and logic needs to be given to God. Just because it makes sense to your logical mind doesn’t mean its God’s will. The Children of Israel didn’t see the logic of conquering the Giants in the land, but if they didn’t they would never had obtained the promise land.
Irrational Logic=Fears, Compulsive, and consistent thoughts. When a thought keeps plaguing you it’s a stronghold
Double minded will make you unstable. Believing what the word of God says sometimes and also believing what the enemy is putting in your mind.
8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
How to Break Strongholds and keep them Broken!
Every believer has the right to use the authority of Jesus’ name to bind and take authority over Satan’s activities. “No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house” (Mark 3:27). Issue a spoken command to the devil that he is bound and he must leave with the stronghold! Exercising authority in the name of Jesus will expel the Devil’s influence. “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues…” (Mark 16:17).
Come together with other believers to pray and intercede against strongholds until you get results. There is intensified power in the gathering of more believers. Prayer with fasting intensifies faith, and faith will break strongholds. “Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast him out? However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:19,21)
Establish the presence of God. Where Satan has been commanded to leave, fill it up with God’s presence. Where the presence of the Lord is, the Devil isn’t! Satan doesn’t want to hang around where people are lifting up Jesus in worship, in singing and prayer. The presence of the Lord displaces the Devil. “For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14).
Submit yourselves and draw close to God. The Bible says this is how we resist Satan and he will flee. The Devil runs from submitted, yielded Christians. He runs from your life, and will run away from where you go. “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
Give no place or vacancy to the Devil. With Satan departed, fill the void with God. Let righteousness be the standard rule and behavior. Provide no pocket of rebellion, corruption or immorality in which Satan can find refuge to rebuild his influence or strength. The scripture says to “not give place to the devil” (Eph. 4:27).
