Is It A New Year?

John 5; 1-10
1LATER ON there was a Jewish festival (feast) for which Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is in Jerusalem a pool near the Sheep Gate. This pool in the Hebrew is called Bethesda, having five porches (alcoves, colonnades, doorways).
3In these lay a great number of sick folk–some blind, some crippled, and some paralyzed (shriveled up)–waiting for the bubbling up of the water.
4For an angel of the Lord went down at appointed seasons into the pool and moved and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was cured of whatever disease with which he was afflicted.
5There was a certain man there who had suffered with a deep-seated and lingering disorder for thirty-eight years.
6When Jesus noticed him lying there [helpless], knowing that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, Do you want to become well? [Are you really in earnest about getting well?]
7The invalid answered, Sir, I have nobody when the water is moving to put me into the pool; but while I am trying to come [into it] myself, somebody else steps down ahead of me.
8Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your bed (sleeping pad) and walk!
9Instantly the man became well and recovered his strength and picked up his bed and walked. But that happened on the Sabbath.
10So the Jews kept saying to the man who had been healed, It is the Sabbath, and you have no right to pick up your bed [it is not lawful].

Ways to not get trapped year after year
1. Vs.3 In these lay a great number of sick folk–some blind, some crippled, and some paralyzed (shriveled up)-waiting for the bubbling up of the water.

Where there is negativity and mind crippling thoughts there are many people there. It is never lonely when there is negativity. Even if you’re not looking the enemy will make sure you are not alone in your mindset.

Be very mindful of the people you chose to be within your life and what kind of crippling mindset you are allowing them and yourself to get into every year, month, week or day. If you notice that you are still in the same place year after year and the same people are there, in the same place as well, not helping you develop and encourage you to more forward, maybe, just maybe it’s time to reevaluate and change so that your not stagnant in a life that can be more. That can help you to help those around you to move forward also if they choose.

2. Vs 4 For an angel of the Lord went down at appointed seasons into the pool and moved and stirred up the water;

There is a season for you that the Lord has prepared for you, be careful of having others come and steer you away from your appointed time. God is going to give you what he put in you; he already started it just by putting it in you. Don’t rush into things without consulting the lord, if the people jumped in the water before it was stirred they still would not have been healed, just wet!

3. Vs. 5 There was a certain man there who had suffered with a deep-seated and lingering disorder for thirty-eight years.

Evaluate your life…… How long have you been suffering the same kind of suffering in your life? Depression, anxiety, anger, un-forgiveness, sickness, bad relationships, poverty minded? Most of us have had the same resolutions every year or the same crippling thoughts every year.

What are they? Face them, and size them up, then you can take down your enemy.

4. Vs. 6 when Jesus noticed him lying there [helpless], knowing that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, do you want to become well? [Are you really in earnest about getting well?]

Why would Jesus ask this silly question? I think of course the gentleman would say YES…. Don’t you think that he would say yes? Would you say yes? Really, then why haven’t you…? If we really want to get well all we have to do is ask.
I believe if we do not face the truth about the situation, we will never change it. Most of the time we say we’re tiered of something but we just say it and do nothing.

5. Vs. 7 The invalid answered, Sir, I have nobody when the water is moving to put me into the pool; but while I am trying to come [into it] myself, somebody else steps down ahead of me.

Invalid-a person made weak or disabled by illness or injury. Are we invalids in different areas of our lives? Made weak or ill by our circumstances?

Excuses, excuses….. You ever had any of those? I sure have…. And I complain about certain situations in my life but if someone tells me to look at it or brings correction I become hostile.. I’ve discovered that it’s usually not what they have said but what I know is hard for me to face and don’t want to really deal with it.

I encourage you to look in and at yourself before you point fingers and get upset with others, including Jesus.

6. Vs. 8-9 Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your bed (sleeping pad) and walk!
9 Instantly the man became well and recovered his strength and picked up his bed and walked. But that happened on the Sabbath.

Jesus is saying….. Enough! How long do you intend to be in this condition? Realize you are only paralyzing yourself. How will you be able to conquer your calling? How can you function for Jesus if you can’t get out of your own way…?
With Prayer, the word and those who will encourage you, you will pick up your bed and walk, no longer to lie paralyzed. Oh and by the way make sure you take your mat so you don’t leave your stuff behind for someone else to pick up.

7. Vs 10 So the Jews kept saying to the man who had been healed, It is the Sabbath, and you have no right to pick up your bed [it is not lawful].

Be mindful of others, not just unbelievers, but your own family, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

If you spend time with the Lord you will know his voice…. If the Lord has set you on a path of Freedom, DO NOT ALLOW OTHERS TO PULL YOU DOWN! The enemy will use even those in the word to cause you hurt. Pray for them to be set free from this behavior, and most importantly know who you are in Christ and allow him to guide you, the Holy Spirit within you will only send you towards the path the Lord has set…. Be Set Free!!!!!
Amen.

What is your take away?

  1. Neena, it is definitely easier to complain about our circumstances than to “take up your bed and walk”! The trouble is, complaining lets off a little steam and allows you to feel better for a moment, but as you said, nothing really changes. I love the fact that Jesus often asked people questions like “What do you want?” and “Do you want to be well?” Definitely good questions to ask ourselves!

I’m visiting for Kelly Balarie’s linkup. December blessings!
